Getting to Bere Island
Bere Island is situated 75 miles west of Cork City on the Beara Peninsula in West Cork. It is a 2 hour drive (directions below) from Cork City and is only accessible by ferry. Bere Island is served by two car ferry services. Please note that you cannot book the ferry in advance. Both ferries operate a first come first served policy and you might have to queue at peak times. But don’t worry, you won’t be left behind, if the ferry is full, they will come back for you!

Driving from Cork City to Bere Island:
Take the N22 westward, following ‘Killarney’ signposting.
8 miles (13 km) after the end of the dual carriageway follow the left hand signpost for Bantry and Castletownbere (R585).
After 1 mile reach the village of Crookstown where you take a left turn (signpost for Bantry).
After 12.5 miles (20 km), take a right turn following the signpost to Glengarriff.
In Glengarriff take a left turn for Castletownbere (R572)
Murphy’s Ferry leaves The Pontoon, which is 18 miles from Glengarriff on left.
Bere Island Ferries is in Castletownbere on the left at the entrance to the town.
By Air
The nearest airport to Bere Island is Cork Airport.
By Sea
The nearest ferry port is Ringaskiddy Ferry Port with weekly ferries to and from Roscoff in France. Most of the car ferries from Britain arrive in Rosslare Ferry Port and Dublin Ferry Port.

Common Questions
Can I bring my car?
Bere Island is served by two car ferries (see ‘getting here’ for more details). Please note that you cannot book the ferries in advance so at peak times you might have to queue.
Is the ferry ever cancelled because of bad weather?
Bantry Bay is very sheltered, and it would be very unusual, particularly during the summer season, that a ferry would be cancelled.
How long does the ferry take?
The crossing from Castletownbere to the West End takes about 15mins and the crossing from The Pontoon to Rerrin Village takes just under 30mins.
What happens if the ferry is full?
Don’t worry, they will come straight back for you. You will not be left behind!
How far are you from the ferry port?
The campsite is located 6.5km from the West End and 1.6km from Rerrin Village. If you are not planning to arrive by car or bike, just contact us in advance and we will arrange to collect you from the ferry.
Is the cost of the ferry included in my booking?
No, you need to pay the ferry operator directly. Please note that both operators only accept cash.
